How to Successfully Navigate a Boat Show

Toronto International Boat Show

Have fun, see cool boats, and fall in love.

Part 1 - Local Shows

Every weekend from now until the end of March there are dozens of boat shows around the country. There’s likely one near you with your local dealers who get all “dressed up” and show off the newest models with all the latest technology in hopes you fall in love and need it on the water by spring.

Whether you’re looking for a new boat for this season, or just an avid boater that wants to think warm thoughts during the cold winter months, boat shows are a great place to see everything under one roof. Here are some basic guidelines to follow for an enjoyable time:

1) Don’t visit on Saturday

Most people wouldn’t think the day to visit is number one but it’s actually the most important.  Saturdays tend to be busier than all the other days combined. It’s full of strollers and people everywhere. You will likely need to wait in line to see the boat you want and the dealer and factory staff won’t have enough time to answer all your questions.

Insider Tip: Visit on opening day. It’s the least attended day and you’ll have plenty of time to spend talking about boats with knowledgeable staff.

Want to see something specific? Make an appointment with a salesperson and they’ll be ready when you arrive. Extra tip: they might even give you a couple free tickets.

2) Visit the show website and look at the exhibitor list and show map

This guarantees you’ll see everything you want and make the most of your time. If you know where you want to go, you can head right there and get down to business.

Not sure who some of the dealers are? Check out their websites and social media before visiting the show. They might have something you’re interested in.

3) Take the decision makers with you

Who is helping you choose your next boat? Do your kids know more about the boat than you and your spouse? (I bet they spend more time researching than you). Take them with you. Take your spouse, your kids, or whoever else is helping you make the decision so if you find something you like you’re in a position to make the deal on the spot.

Insider Tip: But don’t be afraid to leave the show and come back. If the show is local enough and you visit on opening day, go home and do research, schedule an appointment with the salesperson, and come back to the show another day to finalize your deal.

4) The deals really do end after the show

Almost all manufacturers have rebates during tradeshows and dealers have plenty of inventory to sell you. As a former dealer I can tell you that dealers have to send in copies of the contracts with the rebates listed to the manufacturers within a week of the show ending (some need it on Monday after a show). The pricing at a winter show is likely the best you’ll see all year.

Insider Tip: All dealers have select boats that they really want to sell and now is the time they want to sell them.  If you’re flexible on colors or certain options it could save you thousands. Just make sure whatever boat you buy fits your needs and budget.

Write it up pending demo. I’ve seen people order boats without driving them and when it arrives they can’t see over the helm. Good dealers will work with you on this if you’re near frozen water.

5) Wear slip-on shoes, and bring your ID and credit cards

You’ll want to climb in and out of boats with ease and I’ve seen too many people sit and struggle with lacing up and tying boots. You'll save so much time and hassle by being able to slip in and out of your shoes.

If you’re ready to buy you’ll need your ID and credit card for deposit and you can finish up the rest at closing.

Boat shows are full of beautiful boats, bright lights, and lots of people. With proper planning you can have an enjoyable experience and you might just find yourself as one of those families that says, “we didn’t plan on buying a boat today, but let’s write it up.”  #tips
