Joystick Control for Thermal Cameras Now Available with FLIR

As the wave of joystick control expands in the marine world, the industry leader in thermal imaging is now offering a handy product to make nighttime boating safer.
FLIR has unveiled the JCU-4 joystick control that will be compatible with their M232, M300, M400/M400XR and M500 series cameras, as well as their legacy models.
The JCU-4 marks another smart product from FLIR for the marine market. The company unveiled the ultra-handy Ocean Scout Pro thermal monocular at the Miami International Boat Show in February. For those without an integrated camera/chartplotter interface on their boat, the Ocean Scout Pro is an easy-to-carry handheld monocular for locating and identifying objects or landmarks in the water at night. It carries a 500-meter detection range, a 32-degree field of view, can record both photo and video, and is IP67 waterproof.
Joystick thermal imaging marks another addition to a larger trend in boating -- using joysticks to improve operator control under difficult conditions. Both Yamaha and Mercury have been steadily expanding their individual joystick platforms for controlling boats in low-speed maneuvers. Mercury recently expanded their joystick piloting interface to include single engine outboards with a thruster, while Yamaha just revealed the handheld 'reboat control' for their expanding Helm Master EX joystick system.
Now boaters will also be able to adjust their thermal imaging to improve visibility under low light conditions while both underway or while docking.
The FLIR JCU-4 remote offers pan, tilt, and zoom capability on the joystick. The interface will also include buttons for controlling additional camera functions. The mechanism uses a three-axis joystick with a nearly 3-inch dimmable LCD colour display and a back-lit keypad. The coloration options help with operator vision during nighttime boating.
The new system was designed by mariners, for mariners, and is intended for those who actively navigate using thermal imaging and require dependable and intuitive control of a FLIR marine camera. The JCU-4 can also be easily paired between FLIR cameras and monitors or chartplotters. Three custom keys can be pre-programmed for quick access to user-defined camera functions.
