1) Protect Your Prop
When a prop is left in water, it will collect growth. When it is trimmed up, or on the trailer, things can get into it, such as a bug nest and dirt. A prop cover will protect your prop, but so will a plastic bag, held in place with a bungy cord. A plastic bag will save your prop and save you money. Don't forget to "Remove Before Cruise."
2) Emergency Screen Repair
Mosquitos have a special way of finding holes in a screen. You can effectively repair boat screens and keep bugs out by squeezing the screening together at the hole, then applying clear nail polish to re-seal the screen hole.
3) Preventing Mildew in Your Boat
There are special sprays you can buy to eliminate boat mildew. White vinegar can serve the same purpose. But to prevent mildew in the first place, talcum powder can be an effective deterrent. For items like boat carpets and curtains, sprinkle talcum powder over the entire surface and roll up when stored. Talcum powder will absorb mildew and make spring cleaning easier.
4) Unstick Boat Zippers
Zippers on boat canvas are notorious for sticking. Especially when exposed to salt air. Fortunately, there are many excellent ways to lubricate canvas zippers. I have found spraying with WD40 and then adding a coating of petroleum jelly most effective. Other remedies include the application of one of; candle wax, cooking spray, lip balm, light oil, or graphite.
5) A Brass Cleaner Alternative
If you dip a slice of lemon in salt and wipe it over brass, the brass will return to its original polished look.
6) Keep Bugs Off The Boat
Did you know that bugs don't chew gum? They hate it. By placing open sticks of spearmint gum around your boat where crawly bugs might collect, such as food cabinets, you will effectively keep them at bay.
