One of boating's best emerging builders is following the outboard trend.
Dutch builder Wajer Yachts has quickly earned a reputation for pairing beauty and function thanks to a unique blend of minimalist design and luxury features.
The company has also enjoyed a boon from NFL legend Tom Brady, who unofficially brought the brand stateside when he purchased a Wajer 55S, which attracted the attention of boaters across the continent. He quickly upgraded to a Wajer 77. Brady even took his boat to the Super Bowl parade after leading the Tampa Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in 2021.
More recently, Wajer has sized down with the launch of a midsized dayboat, the Wajer 44 runabout.
Now the boutique brand has pared down once again by releasing their first design with outboard power. Previously, all Wajer boats utilized Volvo Penta IPS inboards.
At the Cannes Yachting Festival this week, Wajer unveiled the 38 S with triple Mercury 400 V10 outboards.
The 38 S will also feature a solid and larger roof and the cockpit and console have also been redesigned.
Dries Wajer, Managing Director for Wajer, said in a press release, "We are receiving increasing demand from the United States for the option of outboard engines. Outboard motors are an integral part of American boating culture, and they make navigating shallow waters, for example, much easier. We took this opportunity to also upgrade the boat's design. The result is a robust and versatile boat that feels luxurious thanks to the new design.”
With triple Mercury Verado engines the 38 S will reach a top speed of 55 knots (63 mph), making it the first Wajer to break the 100 km/h (62 mph) plateau. With the smaller platform, the company says that the steering remains extremely agile, the acceleration is immense, and the performance increase is aided by boat a weight reduction of 500 kg (1100 lbs). The joystick (with Skyhook digital anchor, which holds the boat in place via GPS) used for easy docking can also be used with the outboard configuration, as can the autopilot function.
The roof has been enlarged to create more shade and optionally integrated solar panels can be installed on the roof to charge the batteries.
The cockpit has also been updated, featuring a new dashboard with twin digital Garmin screens. Behind the two helm seats, there is now a wet bar, similar to the Wajer 55 S and Wajer 44 S, complete with a sink and faucet, refrigerator, trash bin, and storage space.
A swim ladder allows easy access to the boat from the water via the stern. Optionally, a side door can be configured for easier boarding.
